Retractable folding-arm awnings

A retractable awning opens on two or more folding arms that come out of the wall, with no posts or rails on the ground. It is a classic terrace awning and adapts to almost any façade. We make it to measure in our Elche factory, manual or motorised, and fit it on the Costa Blanca with our own team.

How it works

The arms have springs inside that keep the fabric taut when the awning is open. As nothing rests on the ground, the terrace stays free for tables and sun loungers. In Spain it is also called an awning with "invisible arms", because when it is closed the arms fold away under the fabric and you can hardly see them.

Projection and brackets for your terrace

Covering a ground-floor flat is not the same as covering a penthouse or a large terrace. Before we make anything we measure the opening and the wall where the brackets will go, which can be fixed to the façade or to the ceiling. From there we choose the projection and the pitch for your space. The arms open just below the fabric and leave all the space underneath free, to walk through or to lay the table. When you close it the arms fold and the fabric rolls up, so it takes up little room on the façade.

Retractable, cassette or pergola awning

The retractable awning is the most economical way to shade a terrace of medium depth. If the façade is very exposed or close to the sea, a cassette awning protects the fabric better when it is closed. If you need to cover a large area or want fabric that does not move in the wind, look at the pergola awning, which slides along rails.

Wind and the arms

A common fault on a retractable awning is an arm bent by a gust while the awning was open. You avoid it by closing the awning when the wind gets up and, if it is motorised, with a sensor that closes it by itself. See our page on electric awnings and wind sensors.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an awning with invisible arms?

It is the same retractable awning. The name comes from the fact that, when it is closed, the arms fold away under the fabric and can hardly be seen from the street.

How far can a retractable awning project?

It depends on the width and on the arm the wall can take. We give you the exact measurement on the home visit.

Can my existing retractable awning be motorised?

Almost always, by replacing the crank mechanism with a tubular motor inside the roller tube. We check it before we quote.

What happens if an arm gets bent?

We replace the arm or the inner strap without touching the rest of the awning. Do not try to take it apart yourself: the springs work under a lot of tension. We do it through our awning repair service.

Does a retractable awning need posts?

No. All the weight goes to the wall, so the fixing has to suit the type of wall. If the wall cannot take it, the awning can be fixed to the ceiling or the floor slab above.

How long does a retractable awning last?

The frame lasts many years with an annual service; the fabric is replaced when it loses colour or tension. We explain it in how to extend the life of your awning.
