Pergola awning with tan fabric on a white frame, next to a pool

Pergola awning: the sliding fabric pergola

A pergola awning (in Spain, toldo palillero) is a fabric roof that slides along two rails and gathers in soft folds when you close it. The Spanish name comes from the palillos, the thin cross profiles that keep the fabric taut. It covers large areas and handles the wind better than a folding-arm awning, because the fabric is held on both sides.

Three ways to install it

The system changes depending on where it is fixed:

  • Between walls

The rails run from wall to wall, with no posts. Ideal for patios and terraces enclosed at the sides.

  • On two posts

Fixed to the wall at the back and resting on two posts at the front.

  • Freestanding on four posts

With posts at all four corners. For gardens and pool areas with no wall nearby.

We tell you which one suits you on the home visit, depending on the area and the possible fixing points.

Sliding or flat: the same awning

"Sliding awning", "flat awning", "fabric pergola" and "pergola awning" are names for the same system. What changes is the structure: powder-coated aluminium, with or without a top cover, with acrylic fabric or PVC if you want it to keep the water out.

Closing the sides

It takes side and front screens, with or without a clear window. That turns an open porch into a sheltered space you can also use out of season. That is why it is a very good choice for enclosing the terraces of bars, restaurants and shops.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a pergola awning?

A fabric roof that slides along two rails and folds up as it closes, kept taut by thin profiles. It is also called a sliding awning or a flat awning, and in Spain a toldo palillero or de palillería.

How is it different from a folding-arm awning?

A pergola awning is held on both sides by rails and can cover larger areas with less movement in the fabric. A folding-arm awning comes out of the wall with no supports and is simpler to install.

Can it go between two walls with no posts?

Yes, that is the between-walls version. If there is only a wall at the back, we fit it with two posts at the front.

Does it keep the rain off?

With PVC fabric, yes, it keeps the area dry in normal rain. With acrylic, light rain runs off, but it is not waterproof.

Can the sides be closed?

Yes, with fabric screens, with or without a clear window.

Is it suitable for a bar terrace?

Yes, it is a great choice for bars and restaurants because it covers a large area and takes side screens. See our restaurant awnings.

Does it need a licence?

Because it has posts, it may need one depending on the town, and for bars and restaurants the local bylaw on terraces applies. We advise you on the home visit.
