Abri awning, the freestanding double awning
The Abri awning is a frame carrying two awnings back to back that open in a gabled layout and cover up to 36 m². It does not have to be anchored to the ground: it is held down with counterweights or planters, or mounted on wheels so you can move it. It is used in gardens and on bar and restaurant terraces.
What it is like
A frame in aluminium or galvanised, enamelled steel supports two awnings, one on each side. They can be folding-arm or cassette awnings, and they open together or separately. The sides close with fabric, and a valance can be added at the front.
No work on the ground
This is its strong point. It can be bolted to the ground, weighed down with planters or mounted on wheels. On bar and restaurant terraces on public land this helps when the local bylaw does not allow drilling into the paving, although the town hall always has the final say. Frequently asked questions
How much area does an Abri awning cover?
Up to 36 m² with a single set of two awnings.
Does it have to be anchored to the ground?
No, it is not compulsory. It can be fixed to the ground, weighed down with planters or counterweights, or mounted on wheels.
Does it need a licence on a bar terrace?
It depends on each town's bylaw on terraces. Not being anchored usually makes the permit easier, but check with your town hall.
Can the sides be closed?
Yes, with side screens, and with a valance at the front, so you can also use it on cooler evenings.
Can it be motorised?
Yes, and we recommend it: they are two large awnings and with a motor they open and close with no effort.
Won't it move in the wind if it is on wheels?
Like any awning, it should be closed when there is strong wind.
